In theaters and on TV

A couple new reviews this week, after spending a long time away from everything due to revisions on the novel. My take on the pseudo-documentary about gangsters, Gomorrah, is up at E! Online. And my recap/review of “Dollhouse,” Joss Whedon’s latest adventure into the world of hot chicks and sci-fi is up at HitFix, a [...]

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

My review of Kevin Smith’s latest movie is up at E! Online:
Review in a Hurry: Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks star as friends facing eviction from their crappy apartment who decide to make a porno to pay their bills. While not exactly deep, writer-director Kevin Smith turns this strangely sentimental sex-for-money tale into his funniest [...]

Movie Review: Changeling, Plus A Rant

My review of Changeling, starring Angelina Jolie, is up at E! Online.
Review in a Hurry: A gut-churning true story—about a missing boy and a look-alike runaway forced on his mother by police—is rendered flat by Angelina Jolie’s sedated performance and an unfocused script from J. Michael Straczynski.
As always, you can find my older reviews at [...]

That’s Show Biz…

There’s a reason the behind-the-scenes story is behind the scenes: sometimes, it’s not very entertaining. My review of What Just Happened, a bad script directed and acted by great talent, is up at E! Online:
In Hollywood, where you stand in the Vanity Fair photo shoot is a big deal, but aside from a crowd that [...]

W. Gets A “D”

My review of Oliver Stone’s biopic about George W. Bush is up at E! Online. And despite my credentials as a charter member of the deranged liberal club, I thought the movie was a pointless waste of time.
Review in a Hurry: Director Oliver Stone has a no-win proposition with this CliffsNotes life story of our [...]

New Movie Review Up

My review of The Express, starring Rob Brown and Dennis Quaid, is up at E! Online:
Review in a Hurry: The Express tells the story of Ernie Davis (Rob Brown), the first black player to win the Heisman trophy. Mentored—sort of—by Coach Ben Schwartzwalder (Dennis Quaid), Davis breaks the boundaries of racism as well as records. [...]

My New Gig and My Usual Gig

I’m now posting regularly on the Examiner website as the Los Angeles Trends Examiner. Whatever that means. Subscribe and you’ll get all my pithy bon mots while they’re bon. And pithy.
And my review of Lakeview Terrace, starring Samuel L. “Ezekiel 25:17″ Jackson, is up at E! Online:
Review in a Hurry: Samuel L. Jackson stars as [...]

Friday Is Movie Day

I’m apparently one of the few people in the Western Spiral Arm of the galaxy who liked Righteous Kill. (Currently at 23 percent on RottenTomatoes.com and counting.)
But screw it, I liked watching De Niro and Pacino work together, even if some of it was regular cop-movie fare.
Review in a Hurry: Robert De Niro and Al [...]

Now Playing…

Been seeing a lot of movies lately. I have reviews of Fred Claus, Lions for Lambs, and P2 at E! Online this week. (Thanks to Glenn’s editing, I look a lot smarter than I am.) A lot of good actors were criminally wasted in bad films. My advice: stay home and rent something.
You can [...]
